UNDERSTANDING LEARNING DISABILITIES

When you’re new to the world of special needs, the language and labels can feel overwhelming. There are so many different terms — and sometimes they sound more complicated than they really are.

I’ve put together this simple list of learning disabilities to help explain them in plain, parent-friendly words. It’s not a medical guide, just a gentle starting point for anyone who wants to understand a little more.

Every child is unique. A diagnosis or label doesn’t define who they are, what they can achieve, or the love they bring into the world. For me, these words are just part of our journey with A — but they never tell the whole story.

Types of Learning Disabilities:-

  • Dyslexia – difficulties with reading, spelling, and writing.

  • Dyscalculia – difficulties with numbers and maths.

  • Dysgraphia – struggles with handwriting and written work.

  • Dyspraxia (DCD) – challenges with coordination, movement, and motor skills.

  • ADHD – difficulties with focus, attention, and managing impulses.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – differences in communication, social interaction, and sensory processing.

  • Speech & Language Disorders – difficulties understanding or using words.

  • Mild / Moderate / Severe Learning Disabilities – general difficulties with learning and development.

  • Profound and Multiple Learning Disability (PMLD) – significant learning disability combined with other physical or sensory needs.

A Final Thought

This list is here to help make sense of the words you might hear, but my blog will always come back to our personal story — life with A. Because behind every label is a child who is loved, valued, and full of their own unique personality. I hope this helps! 🌿💛
